According to the BBC, Mourinho is negotiating with Portuguese Super League team Benfica and is expected to lead the team to fight against his former boss Chelsea on September 30.

After losing to Karabach in the first round of the Champions League, Benfica officially announced that the team coach Bruno Lager was dismissed. Benfica chairman Rui Costa said they plan to appoint a new head coach by Saturday, but would not disclose speculation whether Mourinho is their preferred choice.

BBC reported that Mourinho is negotiating to return to Benfica to coach. He started his coaching career in Benfica in 2000, but only coached 10 games before leaving because of a dispute with the club chairman. Mourinho coached Porto from 2002 to 2004, and then coached Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma and Fenerbahce.

If Benfica appoints Mourinho, he will usher in the Champions League with Chelsea on September 30 at Stamford Bridge Stadium. Benfica will also challenge Newcastle away in the Champions League and face Real Madrid at home. Benfica is currently ranked fourth in the Portuguese Super League, 5 points behind the leader Porto, but one game less.
